Kevin Spacey has been invited by director Jakov Sedlar to play Croatia’s first president, Franjo Tudjman, in a feature-length documentary written by Hrvoje Hitrec. Sedlar told HTV that he met Spacey about ten years ago in Los Angeles “He is an extremely interesting man with a rich past, a man who has all possible awards – from two Oscars to theater awards”, said Sedlar, adding that the only thing that mattered to him was the fact that Spacey is a genius actor he has known for years and who is his friend: “I believe in his story. That’s all I can say about this”.
In the movie Spacey, he plays the first Croatian president, Dr. Franjo Tuđman, but it is not just a film about the president.
“I was a good friend and close associate of the late President Tudjman. If it weren’t for him, I don’t think there would be a democratic independent Croatia, a member of the European Union. That is the opinion of the vast majority of people who voted for President Tudjman. It’s not just a movie about him. It is a film about the whole context, about what preceded the creation of Croatia. Without this context it is not possible to understand the story. The film will be interesting because of that. There are a lot of things to be said, especially for the younger generations and for the audience outside. The film will be played all over the world because of Kevin Spacey”, explains Sedlar.
He says Spacey prepared thoroughly before agreeing to play Tudjman. He read several books about him and looked at everything he could on the Internet.
“He came perfectly well informed about him. That’s the type of actor he is. He wouldn’t agree to play someone if he didn’t stand behind it, behind his role and that personality he plays. He knew a lot of details. He absolutely respects President Tudjman, that’s how he plays him”.
The premiere of the film will take place on May 14 in Zagreb this year, on the centenary of the birth of Franjo Tudjman.
“The premiere will be all over Croatia. I think Croatia deserves to see a film about a man who is the father of the state. Especially the younger generations deserve to see what all happened together. Because of Spacey, the film will also play in seven American cities, which is fantastic because it will have American distribution for American audiences. I think that will pull some other countries to organize the premieres of our film”, Sedlar concludes.
